He is considered the impetus of change in what has been called the Beer Revolution in the US and England.Michael changed the way people looked at beer, from everyday slop to gourmet. His review of a beer would make or break a brewery. He had penned numerous books on beer and breweries and most recently on single malt whiskeys.
I met Mr Jackson in the summer on 1989 in Fort Mitchell Kentucky at the now defunct Oldenberg Brewery during the AHA hombrewer conference. He was very approachable and took the time to discuss commercial beers and homebrewing with me over a glass of Oldenberg Premium Verum. All of who had met, read or saw him or his works are better for it as is the state of brewing.

Slainte Michael, Have St Pete pour you a pint tonight!
John J. With the help of the Delco Times I had full press credentials and was allowed to sit with the families of the players. I spoke with quite a few people who are aware of what t we are doing here in Darby and want to be part of Octrolleyfest.

Our two hometown heroes Biz Mackey and Louis Santop went into the hall as Hilldales. Santop's plaque called the team "The Hilldale Daisies" but Mackey's says Hilldale of Philadelphia with no mention of his Japanese baseball connection.
This is another slight to all of us from the area and all who played under the Hilldale banner. Hilldale was a Darby club who played in Yeadon.
I am going to petition this to have the plaque changed, and am going to need all of your help.
Please send an email to info@baseballhalloffame.com
and remember to cc me at darbyhilldale@yahoo.com. I want to show the Hall that the Darby/Yeadon is serious about getting this corrected.

Per an article by Joe Santoliquito of The Daily Times
"What the thumbnail bio erroneously states on MackeyÃ’s Hall of Fame plaque was that he played in Philadelphia, for the Hilldales during their 1925 World Series championship. Santop is the victim of some confusion as well, stating in the event program as gaining fame clubbing prodigious home runs for the Brooklyn Royal Giants before signing with the great Hilldale Club of Philadelphia."One person whocouldnÃ’t miss the errors was John Bossong, who spearheaded a movement that got an historical marker acknowledging the Hilldales achievements, which will be dedicated Oct. 14 in Yeadon, near the Darby-Yeadon border where the team once played, at Hilldale Park."ItÃ’s typical that Darby is being slighted, only this time is that itÃ’s being slighted on a national scale and that historians should have paid more attention to the facts," said Bossong, who took the trip to Cooperstown for the ceremony. "I am glad that they werenÃ’t referred to as the Hilldale Giants. It was a perfect day, to be able to see these guys get in and be recognized for their accomplishments. "ItÃ’s just a shame that none of them are alive, and baseball had to wait until all of the 17 inductees were dead. It did bother me that the facts were distorted. IÃ’m not the be-all and end-all of the Darby Hilldales. But the name Hilldales is actually a neighborhood in Darby that the team was named after."It just perpetuates an argument that Bossong has long sought to rectify. He just didnÃ’t think he would have to take a four-hour drive on a sweltering, muggy day to continue the same battle."Exactly, trying to get them recognized as something thatÃ’s not a Philadelphia team, but a team that played in Darby, Delaware County," Bossong said. When anyone from Delaware County visits the Hall of Fame in the future, itÃ’s important what they notice on Mackey and SantopÃ’s bronze plaques: The ÑHÃ’ for Hilldale is prominently displayed on their caps. So though some skewed versions of who exactly Mackey and Santop played for may persist, they enter the Hall of Fame as Darby Hilldales.ItÃ’s something Bossong can take some solace in."I got a little choked up when I heard their names announced," Bossong said. "They were finally remembered and thatÃ’s all I really wanted."

by darbarian2John J. There will be several timed pick up points and numerous photo opportunities enroute with both cars. "

We are using 2 authentic rebuilt 1947 Art Deco steamlined PCC model trolleys rented from Septa.
To earn money to pay for the Trolleys we are selling tickets to ride with the " Stars" for $100 a piece. Please let your rich relations know...
The second trolley will have a nominal fee but have the same tour.
Those on the VIP trolley will then have a reception at the Darby Library until 11am.
There will be two parades running from both Boroughs
Yeadon - down church to Chester aves to the Hilldale Plaza , It will be lead with a rubber tire trolley ( trolley bus)
with Yeadon dignitaries.
Darby- the Darby parade will go down main being lead by the VIP trolley up 9th st to the Hilldale Plaza.
when both Parades meet at about 1pm ( about) a baseball team ( high school or little league) will run on to the plaza lot where the infield is painted out. This is a perfect marriage with the Hilldales since it will be the 81 anniversary of their championship victory over the Monarchs. It is also celebrating John Drew's involvement with the local area transit, he was the 2nd owner of the Hilldales.
We are looking for volunteers and assistance with the parade and ceremonies. I will let everyone know when a startup meeting will be.
I am currently in conversations with Ed Rendell to be a speaker at the dedication and with Roadways who is sponsoring a traveling Negro League exhibit to be there that day.
This should be a spectacular day honoring our heroes!!!!!!

Since my last post there has been a plethora of activity.
Biz Mackey, Louis Santop and Ben Taylor were nominated to Baseball's Hall of Fame, making it 8 Hilldales enshrined in the hallowed halls of baseball.

The Phillies recognized Biz at their annual Jackie Robinson night in 4/11, Dan Baker gave a wonderful speech on Hilldale and Biz's enshrinement.

On 3/17/06 the State of Pa's historical Commission Approved our Marker! We will be sending in our paperwork later this week.

on 4/20 The Hilldale Project hosted a Night of Negro League Baseball with Stanley Glenn and Harold Gould at the Darby Library. Joe Mitchell was kind enough to share a audio interview he has acquired of Judy Johnson from 1987. A very moving interview.

We were also featured on 4/19's Comcast 's Daily News Live where I spoke about the Hilldales and Biz Mackey with Stan Hochman and Mike Barkhann.

We will be featured on Fox 29's Sports Final on 5/7 at 10.30pm where Billy Vargus interviews Stanley Glenn and Ed Bacon about Hilldale and Negro League baseball. The Negro League players were given a great reception in Japan and helped the Japanese refine their baseball tactics. The success of these trips may have influenced a number of ex-Negro League players to join Japanese pro teams during the 1950s. In this incredibly rare Japense sports magazine (1927), the cover shot is of a Japanese player shaking hands with the Philadelphia Stars Biz Mackey and inside pages show American players black and white; one photo even shows Emperor Hirohito throwing a ball with black players watching -- something no American leader would have done at the time.
John J.
