OcTrolleyFest 2009 to Rumble Along Rochambeau Revolutionary Route

Darby Borough: The Fifth Annual OcTrolleyFest will once again celebrate transportation heritage and community in Darby Borough on Saturday, October 17, 2009 beginning at 10 AM. Sponsored by Sharon Saving Bank, Benett’s Mens Store and Keya Graves Seafood and Steak, OcTrolleyFest 2009 will feature a fundraiser to kick off the restoration and reuse of Darby’s Old Borough Hall by offering rides on a restored vintage PCCII trolley through 364 years of area history. Beginning at Old Borough Hall on Ninth Street just up from the Darby Transportation Center at 2:00 pm, the vintage trolley will travel past the site of Hilldale Park, home of the 1925 World-Champion Hilldales of the Negro Baseball League, past Mount Moriah Cemetery, Cobbs Creek Park, and other treasures to the portal at 40^th and Woodland, at which point it will return to Darby along the same route as traveled by French General Rochambeau and his troops on their way to the final battle of the Revolutionary War at Yorktown. “The 685 miles of the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route, also knows as W3R, has just been designated as a National Historic Trail this past March,” said Jan Haigis who will provide period music during the tour. “This is the only East Coast National Historic Trail and we are thrilled the route passed right through Darby and Delaware County” Tickets for the tour, which begins at 2:00 pm, will cost $10 and are available on a first come-first served basis. “We have already sold 30 of the 50 available seats so we encourage people to reserve early by calling (610) 583-0788,” said Haigis.

Other events at Old Borough Hall, which is planned as an Underground/Aboveground Railroad Museum, will include scarecrow making at 11:00, face painting, historic displays, Pictures with Mr. Pumpkin, a flea market in the Old Borough Hall courtyard (call (267) 318-8292 to reserve a space), a Pumpkin Parade at noon, historic walking tours, music, food and fun. Explore the Spiritual World at Darby Library's Ghost Hunting 101 Program

Do you believe in Ghosts? Do you hear banging, footsteps or voices in your home? Are you really seeing things or is that just your imagination?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, join us at Darby Library's Ghost Hunting 101 on Friday October 23rd from 7:00 pm to 10:30 pm. Teaming up with the Free Spirit Paranormal Investigators, Darby Library will offer a workshop and live paranormal investigation for ghost enthusiasts of all ages.


Addressing a wide range of paranormal topics including the history of Ghost Hunting, EVP theory and psychic protection, the Free Spirit Paranormal Investigators will discuss the do’s-and-dont’s of paranormal investigation.


This program is open to all ages. Admission is $5.00 per person. RSVP is necessary as space is very limited.

Friends: We are only a few days out from October 18 and the celebration of the 150th anniversary of streetcars first coming to Delaware County. I hope everyone is feeling OcTrolleyMusterFestive. We are planning a tour to Eden Cemetery, resting place of Streetcar Activists William Still and Octavius Catto.

The day concludes with a ceremony of dedication for a hstorical marker comemorating the oldest water powered mill in Pennsylvania built by Swedish Governor Johann Printz in 1645, more than 30 years prior to William Penn's arrival. Buzz Off June 7 2008!

As may of you know D&S is a member of the BUZZ homebrew club and a proud supporter of their annual Homebrew Competition the Buzz Off.

The date of the competition is June 7 and as usual we are looking for sponsors and donations.

On June 7th, the Brewers Unlimited Zany Zymurgists (BUZZ) will be holding the 15th annual BUZZ Off home brew competition at Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant in West Chester, PA. The BUZZ Off is both a BJCP and AHA sanctioned competition and last year received 270 entries from around the country. It is also a qualifying event for the prestigious Masters Championship of Amateur Brewing (MCAB).


The BUZZ Off helps fund our club’s activities throughout the year, which promote beer and home brewing education. We are also proud to announce that a portion of our proceeds will be donated to Philabundance, a group committed to hunger relief in the Delaware Valley.

Celebrating transportation heritage and community, the third annual OcTrolleyFest rolls through 361 Years of Pennsylvania History on Saturday, October 20, 2007 with events from 9:30 am to 3:00 PM.
Started in 2005 to celebrate the area's oldest surviving trolley line (SEPTA Route 11 which began service in December 1858 as a horse car line) OcTrolleyFest features a 1947 Vintage Trolley making a loop between Darby, Yeadon, Colwyn, and Southwest Philadelphia with events along the route. Riding the trolley is free, space permitting.
The theme this year is Trolleys and All That Jazz: and we are also celebrating the Centennial of the 1907 arrival of the streetcar in Yeadon and Collingdale, and the 325th anniversary of the 1682 founding of both Pennsylvania and Darby.
Throughout the day: events include tours, a flea market, mini-train rides, historical scavenger hunt, book-signings including a new book on Subirban Philadelphia Trolleys by Ken Springirth, Community Fair, music, scarecrow making, historical reenactments, contests , balloon sculpting, pictures with Pumpkin Man, information about other interesting area treasures, and much more

Michael Jackson dies

Author, Documentarian and Beer Drinker-Michael Jackson, The Beer Hunter passed away last week at his home in London.
Michael Jackson famed beer writer died last week in his home in London of a heart attack and complications of Parkinson's disease. He is considered the impetus of change in what has been called the Beer Revolution in the US and England.Michael changed the way people looked at beer, from everyday slop to gourmet. His review of a beer would make or break a brewery. He had penned numerous books on beer and breweries and most recently on single malt whiskeys.
I met Mr Jackson in the summer on 1989 in Fort Mitchell Kentucky at the now defunct Oldenberg Brewery during the AHA hombrewer conference. He was very approachable and took the time to discuss commercial beers and homebrewing with me over a glass of Oldenberg Premium Verum. All of who had met, read or saw him or his works are better for it as is the state of brewing.

Whats Brewing at D&S?

This weekend will be a big one, I am hoping to get in 3 batches and try doing 2 wines!

First brew will be the Hop Hammer. HH was an blue ribbon award winner at the Buzz Off in June, I am hoping to duplicate it for the Masters competition in February! The Hop Hammer will have 13 pounds of Pilsner malt, 8 oz of hops (4 simcoe and 4 columbus scattered thru 120 minutes of brewing) 6oz of bourbon soaked french oak , and the 099 high gravity yeast!
I am entering the last 2 bottles of the January batch into the Malt Madness competition

Next is the Frozen Tundra Cream Ale, this is a variation of the Mannion Cream Ale with a little more hops (.25 n brewers, .5 cascade and .5 warrior) it's base is 4lbs of ultra light malt and 1lb of dried rice. A fine session beer at a 5% alcohol volume! The official beer of The Dukes of Earl's Frozen Tundra Tailgate! Held this year in the Dragon's Lair Underdeck!

Then we are doing a D&S classic, the original recipe of Bossong's Bitter! Our Christmas favorite. I brew this every year to give out to friends at Christmas. It has 6 lb ultralight and .5lb lite dme, .5 carastan crushed grain, 2 oz of kent golding hops and good ole california yeast! This is what I call my house beer that I love to have on tap for visitors!

I got 2 wine kits form a friend, Cherry and Apple. Heck I'll give it a try, they are gallon kits.

Malt Madness

I am entering 3 brews in the Malt Madness competition to be held 9/8 in Allentown. I am sending the Hop Hammer Imperial IPA, Mjolinor Honey Pale Ale, and Mad Darbarian IPA . I am competiting against my self in with all the IPA's but that's what I brew best!

The Darby Borough Historical Society is having a 325th birthday party this Saturday

Details-
The birthday party for Darby Borough starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Darby Methodist Meeting Cemetery (Old Mount Zion Cemetery), at 1400 Springfield Rd. in Collingdale.
Around 2 p.m., tea will be served at the Darby Friends Meeting House, at 1017 Main St. in Darby.
The event is free and open to the public.

Here are a few updates to what is going on with Octrolleyfest!
Octrolleyfest will be held on 10/20 this year with the usual fanfare
book signings, trolley rides, historical tours, lectures , an autograph party at Hilldale Park, and events at the Historic Darby Fire Company 1 as we try to get a historic marker for them.
The state turned them down in 2007 but we will get them one in 2008.
We will also be having events at The Blue Bell Hotel, and the Old Swedes Mill along Cobbs Creek. There will be a dedication for a historic marker to be placed there.

We are looking for sponsors -personal and corporate- to assist in this years events, if you can donate time, money or merchandise let us know!

We are in the planning stages of this years event and want everyone to participate.

Ideas we are pursuing are
a horse shoe tournament, looking to get hold of the "Creekers" from the movie "The Borough", Musicians and any other performer who would like to do their thing during the day,
People willing to give historic tours around town,
Anyone willing to do an information booth,

What's Brewing at Darbarian and Sons!
This week at the brewery we did a Hop Devil Clone and a American brown ale. The ABA used the 099 high gravity yeast and is expected to hit 11%, a fine brew to crawl up to this winter.
The Hop Devil Clone is from a recipe I picked up at Keystone Homebrew. Hop Devil is my favorite brew and I hope mine turns out as good as Victory's version.
I will be doing a Historic Ale for the Blue Bell for Octrolleyfest, the recipe will be an ale with corn sugar and dark malt. It will sort of be a Porterish type of ale, like one brewed and enjoyed in the Historic Blue Bell in the 1700's.

Hilldale Book Finally Released!

Dr Neil Lanctot has released the definitive book on the Hilldales and Negro Leagues in paperback. This book based on the development on Negro League Baseball focusing primarily on the Hilldales 22 year reign, their 1925 Negro League World Series Champions and 8 players in the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
The Book "Fair Dealing and Clean Playing: The Hilldale Club and the Development of Black Professional Baseball, 1910-1932" originally released in 1994 has gained new life after the Hall of Fame induction of Raliegh "Biz" Mackey in 2006.
In October of 2006 the state of Pennsylvania recognized the Hilldales by placing a historic marker on the site of Hilldale Park which was on the border of Darby and Yeadon in Delaware County.

Darbarian and Sons HomeBrewery have taken first place for the English & Imperial IPA's category with it's Hop Hammer and 3rd place for it's Odin's Eye Braggott label in the 14th annual Buzz off. See the results here

Hop Hammer was a free style ale categorized as a Imperial IPA made with 5 gallons of Iron Hill Pilsner Malt, 4 oz of Columbus and 4 oz of Simcoe, and White Labs High Gravity yeast.
With this first place finish D&S have qualified for the national MCAB X to be held in February 2008.

The Buzz Off is a national competition that qualifies HomeBrewers for the prestigious Masters Championship of Amateur Brewing (MCAB). The first place winners qualify for MCAB X held in Houston Texas February 8-9th 2008!

D & S would like to thank the HomeBrew Club Buzz for hosting this competition and
all the hard work Chris Clair, Paul McGinnis, Dave Houseman and Russ Hobough have put in to make this event a prestigious and growing competition.

On Saturday June 9 2007 Darbarian and Sons HomeBrewery will be competiting in the 14th annual BUZZ OFF HomeBrew competition hosted by Iron Hill Brewpub in West Chester Pa.

The BUZZ Off is both a BJCP and AHA sanctioned competition and last year received over 280 entries from around the country. It is also a qualifying event for the prestigious Masters Championship of Amateur Brewing (MCAB).



D&S will be submitting 6 brews this year,

Mad Darbarian Imperial Ale- Strong Calif style Pale Ale

Yukon Cornelious's "California Gold" Steam Ale- California Style Steam Ale

Winter Warlock's Cherry Stout- Fruit Flavored Stout

Mad Darbarian Ale- American Pale Ale

Iron Brewer "Hop Hammer!"- Free Style Ale made with 5 gallons of Pilsner drawn right out of Iron Hill's vats! I experimented by using 8 oz of Hops ( 4 Columbus, 4 siomcoe) and White Labs 099 High Gravity Yeast, packed a whallop! Was given a 38 by one of the Iron Hill Brewers (out of 50) and was called the Nectar of the Gods! Hope it does as well at the Buzz Off!

Odin's Eye Braggott-A Meade/Ale infusion! strong honey presence and IPA ingredients

There is also a label competition, We will also be sending our finest labels for judging...

Darbarian and Sons New Home, New Logo!

In November on 2006 Darbarian and Sons HomeBrewery relocated to the West Bradford Section of rural Downingtown. 10 days after they were moved in production began. So far 13 batches of Ales (65 gallons)were brewed with 4 batches of Root/Birch/Cream sodas. The facilities come with a new outdoor propane powered heating/brewing system and dedicated geo-thermal storage space. With the addition of newly acquired brewing equipment D&S is shooting for a 25 batch year.

Iron Brewer "Hop Hammer!"- Free Style Ale made with 5 gallons of Pilsner drawn right out of Iron Hill's vats! I experimented by using 8 oz of Hops ( 4 Columbus, 4 siomcoe) and White Labs 099 High Gravity Yeast, packed a whallop! Object is to enter it into competiton with other brews drawn form the same vat for best of judging. to be announced 5/21!

Ed Bacon, Hilldale Link dies

Ed Bacon , Negro League player passed away
Our last link to the 1925 Hildales has passed away.
Ed Bacon was a former Bat boy to the Hilldales and 3rd baseman for the Darby Phantoms, Negro League semi pro team. Ed was our voice to the past, with his insight we were provided with an oral history about the Hilldales and it's players. Even though he was in Ill health Ed made it to dozens of events telling his stories about Hilldale and negro league baseball in the 20's and 30's. He was honored by Yeadon in 2006 on Flag Day by being given the memorial Flag Yeadon's highest honor and in October by the Hilldale Memorial group for all his work in assisting us get the Historical marker. He is home now playing on the Lord's field of dreams, he will be missed by all of us whose lives he enriched
His funeral will be at
Wednesday 5/2 11am at Union Memorial United Methodist Church 1007 Summit Street Darby Pa 19023
Wake will be 9-11 at The Church
